I got my start in television news, at a small station, in Colorado Springs as a general assignment reporter and weather man, at one hundred bucks a week. I learned weather in the Air Force, and Colorado was a perfect place to expand on what I knew. While this was an opportunity to hone my skills as a journalist, as well, I knew, in order to move up, I had to move on. Those adventures, including how it came about that I got a call from Ted Turner’s right hand man, Ted Kavanau, are among many stories, told in a neutral way, in my book Saints, Sages and Presidents: Impressions of a Journalist. My rise at CNN was steady and solid. I touched each rung of news management along the way. I began as a producer.
